First Graduate Student Conference: Spanish & Portuguese Studies

Hola, have you attended a literary conference or presented to one at the U of M? The Department of Spanish & Portuguese Studies invites you to the First Graduate Student Conference in Hispanic and Lusophone Literatures, Cultures, and Linguistics​ entitled “Power, Prestige and the Periphery”  that will be held in April 11 & 12, 2014 at University of Minnesota - Twin Cities Campus. For those students interested in the expression of language as a symbolic order have been used repeatedly throughout history and across cultures as means, motivations, and justifications for domination and repression.​ You will be also hear talks about: gender and sexuality, nationalism, Spanish in the US, power, hegemony, the subalter, translation. By going to this conference, you will also:

1. Meet people from different departments and cities.

2. Get ideas related to presenting and exposing your ideas in public.

3. See how grad students present/develop their topics and use media.

4. Think about interdisciplinary topics for future research you already have in mind.



The students in charge of the conference used The Guernica (Picasso) as their image. Why do you think they did it?
