Safer Sex Week 2017

From February 6-10 2017, SHADE (Sexual Health Awareness and Disease Education) celebrated its biggest annual event - which is Safer Sex Week! SHADE is a student organization under Boynton Health that spreads accurate sexual health information, distributes sexual health knowledge and resources to students, as well as provide peer and confidential HIV testing and counseling. Over the course of the week, we managed to spread sexual health education through a variety of fun activities, including a scavenger hunt! Besides that, we had prizes and gift card drawings for the activities.

On Monday, we had free bowling in Goldy's Gameroom. Students had a great time bowling with their friends, and we were able to provide sexual health knowledge and resources over free drinks and pizza!

On Tuesday, we volunteered to make safer sex kits for MAPS (Minnesota AIDS Project). We managed to make 400 kits to distribute to the public. During the event, we also educated volunteers with information on HIV!

On Wednesday, we invited multiple sexual and women's health organizations around the Twin Cities to join our Sexual Health Fair at Coffman. Among the organizations that tabled during the fair were Planned Parenthood, Rothenberger Institute, and the Whole Woman's Health Center. Furthermore, we had student groups that tabled alongside us, such as The Aurora Center which helps combat sexual assault and provide support for the victims, and the Gender and Sexuality Center on campus! On Thursday, we partnered with Goldy's Gameroom to have a sexual health-themed Trivia Night. Students got to learn more about health and their bodies over free food. We ended our week with making sleepover/overnight kits on Friday. Our kits included mini toothbrushes as well as other necessities!

Overall, we are very grateful for the support we received during Safer Sex Week and would like to thank everyone for making it happen. We had a huge turnout that included many international students. See you all next year!
