The University of Minnesota is highly ranked in many areas by prestigious institutions and organizations. Here are some of our recent institution rankings:

  • 8th in research spending among public research universities by National Science Foundation ($921 million)
  • 9th best U.S. public research institution according to the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities
  • 35th ranked institution in the world by the Center for World University Rankings
  • 38th best global university by Newsweek
  • 40th top university in the U.S. by Q.S. World University Rankings
  • 41st best global university by U.S. News and World Report
  • 56th best world university by Times Higher Education
  • Highest-rated public education program in the world

The University's programs also receive top rankings:

  • Social sciences: 3rd among U.S. public universities
  • Medicine and pharmacy: 9th among U.S. public universities
  • Engineering, technology, and computer science: 11th among U.S. public universities
  • Life and agricultural sciences: 11th among U.S. public universities
  • Natural sciences and mathematics: 13th among U.S. public universities
  • More than 60% of our doctoral programs rank in the top 25% nationally, across a wide range of programs in agriculture, engineering, humanities, sciences, and social sciences (National Research Council)
