Outstanding Faculty and Alumni

Our faculty and alumni have won 26 Nobel Prizes, along with other prestigious awards such as the Pulitzer Prize and Guggenheim Fellowship. Our graduates include U.S. and foreign diplomats, Olympians, and accomplished scientists, authors, and artists. Collectively, our alumni have founded more than 19,000 companies.

Innovations by our faculty and alumni have changed the world. The cardiac pacemaker was invented at the University of Minnesota. So was the black box airplane flight recorder, the retractable seatbelt, and Ziagen, a drug to treat HIV/AIDS. And University of Minnesota physicians performed the first successful open-heart surgery.

The Scholars Walk and the Wall of Discovery on campus celebrate the research and classroom accomplishments of our faculty and students.
